Physician Job Payment Approaches

Physician compensation is negotiated  and delivered individually by ten provincial and three territorial governments, allowing for different funding arrangements. Normally, there are two payment systems: salaried or fee-for-service. Depending on the Provincial or Territorial government, this will usually be administered at the discretion of the employer; however, on occasions the Physician himself may be given an option of payment method. Fixed salaries tend to have firm structures and bandings.

Almost all Regional Health Authorities offer full relocation assistance for relocation Doctors and, depending on the Province, there can also be Provincial assistance. Ontario tends to be the least giving in this regard.Often times, generous provisional incentives, including funding for setting up a Practice will also be offered, usually in remote areas. Most Provinces typically offer retention bonuses which tend to become more financially attractive depending on length of time in one of the provinces of Canada.
